Possible Markings on 351 windsor FMX kick down rod
« on: August 16, 2013, 04:33:01 AM »
I left the kick down rod in evaporust overnight and when I washed it this mark showed on the end. Does this stem from some paint mark or perhaps most of the rod had some sort of coating but not the ends ?

IMHO most likely a mistake when the worker was dipping the part in the plating bath (or the level was low)

Have not seen the same pattern in all the 69 FMX kickdowns I've seen

I would choose clear zinc for your build date. I've seen a couple late 69s that had zinc dichromate like the 70s

My vote would be cad or bright/clear zinc.

That is what we choose on the last 69 I did - never a comment from judge nor other viewer.

Jeff, the zinc dichromate is what I personally have seen before in cars ,junkyards etc. with remnants of the gold . When the gold wears off it is silver  and may be a source of possible mis identification on a FMX arm. As a side note the C6 rods are zinc dichromate too. I think the C6 ones are more commonly seen and have been documented more. I think that since the C6 ones were Zinc dichromate it would stand to reason that the FMX ones would not be any different. Of course there is always a possibility of a variation difference . I will continue to do more checking for variations but at the very least I am confident the gold was one of plating colors on the FMX arm .Just my opinion.

The Blue 69 SCJ Mach 1 is also silver. I believe some C6 were also Dichromate. Have not payed enough attention as most of our projects were 4 speed (Boss's)

1970 428 cjs were gold with a green color code but they were bent different down on trans linkage end to clear the 70 lock out rod to steering column.

Thanks for the replies. I had another look and a tiny amount of gold colored residue shows in certain light.
