Topic: Original Ford Factory replacement engine

My friend who is also a Mustang lover went to a garage sell and bought an old Mustang engine in a wood crate where the seller’s dad had left it for over 40 years. I will not tell you what he paid for this engine but the buyer and the seller thought this was some old worn out engine that was replaced and stuck in the box the new one came in.  When he and I got the engine out of the crate and got all the old wax paper off the motor we found ourselves looking at a brand new NOS Ford factory replacement motor.  It is a 5 bolt block with 66 heads. Uh, no, I don't think so.  I don't know if you still can, but you used to be able to walk up to the parts department at a Ford dealership and order a remanufactured engine.  What you got was a remanufactured engine that was outsourced to any of a number of approved Ford rebuilders.  The mix of parts you have is typical of this process.

That what I thought I said when calling it a replacement engine.  If you went to ford and bought a 289 this is what you would get.  Remanufactured.

The numbers on the deck were used to indicate what size select-fit pistons were to be used in each bore.

Thanks for sharing.  Looks like a typical rebuilt engine, the tag is pretty cool.  Might be a neat motor to use for display.  Would have to broken up to be correct for anything.  Has to be one of the last 5 bolt blocks since it has an August casting date.

Yea the heads were one 66 and one 67 which Mike is keeping for now. We are going to reassemble the short block and sell it since he has no use for a five bolt and my 64.5 has the original in it still.

It's most likely going to be extremely difficult to find someone that has a car that the engine would be date-correct for... seeing as early August '64 was when the switch from 5 to 6 bolt occurred.
