Turn signal switch/horn contacts 1964.5 Mustang
« on: July 09, 2013, 12:05:56 AM »
I just replaced my turn signal switch with correct switch for 1964.5 cars with generators.  Horn hasn't worked for years.  First noticed horn brush was missing from the steering wheel and then that the turn signal switch apparently is missing, from supplier, a similar brush.  Can't find a picture of what's missing or an answer to "what goes there"?  I've attached a picture that shows the apparent brush holder.  Supplier is checking it out, but no answer yet.

Still don't have an answer to my question.  I have worn "Google" out looking for an answer.  Does anyone have an answer?

It's a spring with contacts on the ends, one bigger than the other.  One fits in the turn signal switch, the other goes in the steering wheel.  These are sold by any parts vendor.  You might want to buy a few extras, the big ends of the repro are brittle and break easily.  I went to replace one on a 64.5 recently, it was broken.  I put in a repro in the steering wheel, went to install the horn ring and the replacement broke worse than the one that was in there.  Lots of cussing that day!

Thanks.  One vendor handles this item and calls it a horn brush.  I assume this is what you have described?

Yes, that's it.

All I can say is be careful installing the horn ring.  I'd prefer NOS, but kind of hard to find.  Maybe try holding the brush tip down with a feeler gauge when putting the horn ring on?  Probably some way to do it safely.
