69 Hood Question
« on: March 29, 2013, 08:39:38 PM »
Not sure if this has been covered on another forum but I don't recall seeing it so I'm throwing this out to all the smart 69 guys we have here :)

Question is there a very early hood and a "rest of the production year" hood?

My Nov. 19 1968 built car had the hood with the 4 pie shaped cutouts.
It's illustrated in the MPC.
You could still have ram air at first without a shaker (except for the rubber rain flap blocking the mouth of the bolt on scoop).

Guess I should post some pictures ;)  Realize that the pie cut out were done for a short period about mid fall but I'm looking a possible very early feature that appears on what may be all hoods rather than just those with the fake scoop

So here is the puzzle. I've got a few very early Dearborn cars where the bottom hood support/liner has different cut outs than the typical hoods. Anyone else ever see one of these and if so on which cars (vins)

Looks like three possible versions

"Normal" typical design

The hood in the second photo, red and shaker, is the same as the one on my car.  9T02R 108444.  Both date stamps, on the hood, are; 9 6 W3.  Brian

Hard to tell from that angel are all three (the ovals I'm focusing on) of those openings cut out or just formed deeper than the "normal" ?

SO far I've got

1- Very early (all three ovals open) - Both examples from the first 30 cars vined

2- Fairly early - Passenger two ovals open - Example from around 1200

3- None of the three open

Thanks

All three ovals are indented/recessed about 1/4".  None are cut out.  I will put up a picture when able.  Brian

September 1968 Hood.  Brian

Thanks - looks like the "normal" hood.

The first two hoods (pictures) are from cars VIN'ed for the first day - so likely they were assembled in the first two weeks

The third was around the 1200th  car. All very early cars.

We'll see what develops

So you haven't seen the two cut out style?

Must have been some odd early configurations that they dropped pretty early

From what I remember the cutouts were on both sides & not like the 1 photo cutout on just 1 side is odd.  The 69 prototype white Bunkies boss 302 with the stripes & slats & spoiler & shaker cj mach 1 (BARN FIND) car had the hood cutouts but it was built fall 68 from what I remember.

priceless

Our original Feb 69 Metuchen built Mach1 hood is also like the last picture (silver one).
