Another convertibe fastener question, tack strip to body
« on: March 24, 2013, 04:10:37 AM »
67-68 FAM's call out a forming machine screw w/lead point.  1 1/2" and 2" 1/4-20.  Most of the ones I have seen are a pointed end self tapper, w 7/16" hex head and captive washer.

Running change, FAM is incorrect, or somewhere along the line a lot of PO's got a hold of the same pointy ended screws...???

Similar to these?   7/16" head.  1 1/2" and 2" long.  (two sizes shown as a top owner sent this to me asking which was correct, I have seen mostly ones like on the left, but don't have a large sample)

Those look like ones put in because originals were stripped (common) Originals are machine thread. I'll see if I can find a couple and post

Ok that clears it up.  I have some AMK that are machine screws and similar to the spec from the FAM and Guide to Ford fasteners...

Thanks!

Mine were machine threads and looked great so I had them replated.  The holes in the gutter where they screwed-in were stripped so I installed aluminum Rivnuts with the correct threads and they will never be seen.

Based on '68 Body FAM reference, Guide to Ford Fasteners notes:

377344  Hex head Conical SEMS, 1/4-20, 3/4"OD, 1 1/2"L
380462  Hex head Conical SEMS, 1/4-20, 3/4"OD, 2"L

Believe both are 7/16" hex head.

AMK carries 377344-S36 and references 380462-S36 as "similar" (actually says their item for 377344-S36 is similar too). They are used on 64-73 Mustang convertibles so replacements could be a found in a junkyard. If the top was replaced, or repaired, there's no telling what was used.

Looks like they only have the 1 1/2" so for the 2" its "similar", just shorter...

Those are the exact ones mine had.  There was two lengths.  A couple of mine were short that were suppose to be long but I'm sure that was done on the assembly-line, so I put the same ones back.

I ordered the kit from AMK to replace the incorrect lengths but did not use them because they were accurate enough to suit my desires.
They were pretty nice and a fair copy but I just didn't like them.

Here's the rivnuts.  I know, I know...I'm a stickler in one respect and put something totally un original.  We all are guilty I would like to think.??
