Coil location Change Date
« on: March 03, 2013, 07:29:49 PM »
Was the location of the coil changed exactly when the cars were switch over to alternators from generators or did cars with alternators sometimes have the coil placed horizontally on the intake manifold rather on the front of the block vertically?

On cars with alternators it had to do whether the car had a thermactor emissions control system (T/E) or not. It had to do with making room for the T/E air pump. Cars with the T/E had it on the manifold. Cars without T/E had it on the right front cylinder head. I don't believe 65 Mustangs could get the T/E system but not exactly sure, so this would apply to a 66 Mustang.

Reason I ask is I have an OCt 64 FB frm SJ and when my father first bought the car in 1992 from the second owner, only had 48k miles on it, the coil was mounted underneath the air cleaner.  A friend of mine from the local Mustang club has a 65 Convt from Dearborn built around the later part of 64 and his father was the original owner and he says the coil was mounted on the intake.  So just wondering if workers were still putting coils under the air cleaner shortly after the change over from generator to alternator.

Does it have an alternator or generator?

Charles or Jeff, any idea as to when they switched the coil to the front of the block?

My opinion is the location was changed when Ford went to alternators.

Could be any number of reasons how a coil ended up on an intake later on.
