Topic: 64.5 water pump date code and timing cover

OK guys two questions.

1. What would be the correct date casting number on the water pump for a April 64 built D code (289 V4)

2. The car came with a couple of extra timing chain covers. Some have the oil filler tube and some do not. I know about the ribs but not sure if a early 289 had the oil filler tube in the timing cover or valve cover or both???

I believe the casting number on the water pump should be C40E-8505-A.  Date code I would assume would be April 64.  Should have a 64 in a circle with 4 little dots in it.  I assume it could have 3 dots as well for March but I don't know how early they started producing parts.  Maybe someone would know what the earliest date code would be.

Timing chain covers with the oil fill tube, go with the closed valve covers, and the intake with the down draft tube, behind the carb, the no PVC type system.

Not necessarily.  I too have an April built 64.5 with the D-code 289 and my oil fill is on the valve cover with NO down draft tube.  Bob Mannel's book on small block Ford engines does a great job of detailing how the engines were configured with which parts.  I would recommend purchasing a copy of his book.
