VIN on Engine Compartment sides one number off?
« on: January 21, 2013, 08:34:29 PM »
6T07T235364 is the VIN for my Mustang but the right side (if sitting in the drivers seat) is one number off from this.  Shouldn't these be the same?

Yes, all VIN's should match. Not uncommon though for Ford to make VIN mistakes.  I had a '66 coupe 289 that I drove daily from 1981-1989 that the VIN on the drivers side apron and the VIN on the drivers door was off one letter, the engine code on the door was T(6 cyl) and the one under the hood on drivers apron was C (289,V-8). All the rest of the VIN  matched.

Also, I read in Mustang Monthly back years ago that approximately 50 vehicles(Mustangs, fairlanes, etc) on the assembly line was stamped with the same VIN.

Here are pictures of the VIN...The first picture is the correct VIN (buck tag, door, etc.).

Turnall - short answer as mentioned is yes the purpose fir identification purposes is that they all should match. Hopefully the one that is visible in the fender cut out is one of those that matches the paperwork and door tag (for the lazy DMV worker ;)

Have seen a few "corrected" VIN's  if true (the fifty car story) I'm sure they corrected them - if not that's allot of crushed cars.

Never said in the article if corrected, was just talking about Ford VIN mistakes in the first generation.

Must have been a new worker in that position that day - not like they hadn't been stamping VINs on the inner panels for years prior

Do you remember the author of the article? Guess in Jim Smart

If it happened, it could have been a disgruntled guy that was about to quit.

Between the VIN and the trim code you have a unique one of a kind car!

At least the different number is covered up, I saw a car one time that
had the exposed VIN double stamped with two numbers, different
engine codes.

Lord, Jeff, that's been several years ago, maybe even 10 or more years.

I have every issue of Mustang Monthly since its beginning , I'll get the time, I'll go back and see if I can find that issue, and I think it was Jim Smart.
