70 Caliper cover finish clarification
« on: January 24, 2013, 06:02:26 PM »
May 15, 70 Dearborn B2.

I am restoring my original  caliper covers and after reading the archives as well as looking at the article published here on Faux Galvanizing I am not sure what the finish is. Is it silver possibly zinc (as I thought), or galvanized like the example in the  Faux galvanizing article?

As a side note, after cleaning my covers up, they did have a hint of galvanized plating, but that could have just been discoloration and age.

Originally the covers were galvanized IMHO and that is how I currently restore them - replacements are zinc so many of those have found their way onto our cars over the years

Because of the age of these cars, most if not all driver cars have had these components changed over the 42 odd years of service depending on location, road salt, ocean salt ect. Original shields I think had the Fomoco R stamped at the top center.  I would imagine there were several sources that stamped these and probably used several factory finishes. I have attached May 1970 DAP untouched cover. Its apparent Dearborn also color coded with a green daub of paint. The finish almost seems to be a dull cadmium with NO shiny zinc finish under bolts.
