Source for '69 Hood Insulation
« on: November 13, 2014, 10:37:04 AM »
Does anyone have any suggestions (or possibly a source) for a decent reproduction of the '69-70 hood blanket?  Since I'm on the east coast, a lot of the cars here are Metuchen built (like mine), and the hood blankets are long gone.  I did find a couple of good examples at the Savannah nationals, and it's obvious how horrible the reproduction blanket is; it's not even close.

I've read Jeff's article about reproducing the factory trunk underlayment, and I was thinking that maybe some of those processes/procedures would apply to making a correct hood blanket.  My only worry is that original blankets appear to be molded to fit the contours of the hood; it's most noticeable around the hood scoop area, where the hood frame is recessed.  I have no idea how you would recreate that molded look, nor how you would keep it from eventually losing the shape from the heat under the hood.

Again, does anyone have any suggestions?  This is one of those details that you hardly ever see, and most people don't even realize their car had hood insulation originally.  Thanks for any help/advice!

At one time I emailed NPD and got a response from a Scott Halseth.   This is what he wrote:  "I haven’t pursued it due to lack of time and no samples.  I need to get with one of the possible manufacturers and see if they are still interested.  If so, I still need several good samples to copy from."

Trying to get someone to ship there hood insulator to Florida might be tough.

My hood off of my 69 Cobra Jet still has the original insulation pad on it.  I'll post some pictures of it.

Still in the same boat.  Need a good sample to send to the manufacturer.
