1970 hood issues
« on: July 30, 2012, 06:45:06 PM »
The hood is for 69 with a shaker, my car is a 70. I need to ream out the holes, they are round and i need dimensions for the elliptical holes. Fit up is great with the only problem being passenger side rear, the hood looks bowed about even with the shaker on that side too. My hinges wont go down anymore. Have read all the previous posts on how to remeedy these problems. I really need pics and dimensions the ellipses. I purchsed a template kit for drilling the twist lock holes, of course that can be good guide for the holes, but i really want to keep it close to original. I spent a ton for the 70  hood lip moulding and i dont have the backing plate, i assumed it was on the hood, not knowing it was a 69 hood. I thought i have seen the backing plate at NPD.HELP

eBay user fishfarts sells an exact repro for the 70 hood lip molding backing strip.
Doesn't have any up now, but message him for it on another of his items.
It attaches with rivets.
You must have it if you want a 70 hood molding to fit right.
I have a 70 hood, but it will take a while to get at it to measure and photo.
I'll trade you the hood latch striker, a 70 for a 69 if you're interested.

I'll email you the pics of my cutouts and latch.
I'll give it a bead blast.
I'd get a second opinion on the cutouts.
They're not that uniform.
Could be an owner mod of a 69 hood.
I can't find a date code on the driver's side front lip underside.
The beak got bent, and it's obliterated.
As to why Ford switched from stamping at the driver's side rear of the hood, I'd have to say the better idea light bulb was burnt out.
Mustang hoods were always getting bent with their sticking out design.

I bead blasted the 70 striker today and it's got wear from the catch.
Overall, I don't think it looks good, and I would replace it, so I'm sure you would see it that way too.
It's nowhere near the condition of the ones in Jack's pics.
That's what you should have.
When you find a 70, I'd like to buy your 69 version though.
I can mail you the paper and pencil rubbings of the egg shaped cutouts if you like.
An original backing strip is a tough one.
Who would part one off a good hood, so that leaves bent or rusted hoods, and what happens to the hood happens to the strip.
I think fishfarts was $18, with the proper number and size and spacing of holes, and the same folded edge.

Will do, I may come across one while looking for the 69 version.
I mailed off the papers with the egg shaped cutouts rubbings.
They're sharp enough and dirty enough that they marked the paper clearly just holding the paper in place and running my finger over it.
On second thought I'm going with them being original.
The hoods not cut topside for twist locks, so who would cut the underneath only besides the manufacturer?
