1966 Anniversary Gold Mustang
« on: June 08, 2010, 03:01:40 PM »
I am the proud newest owner of one of the Anniversary Gold Mustangs celebrating the Millionth Mustang being "born" in 1966. Mine is the Denver, CO car DSO# 511111. I want to restore this precious car back to as original as possible and so I am asking for your expertise and collective background knowledge regarding these cars. I have already followed/read the discussion threads on the VMF and Mustang Monthly sites. I am looking for some resources, details and nuances particular to these cars so that I can make sure I restore correctly and not just interpretation alone. Besides the special paint color, I also know that it is supposed to have Black Deluxe Pony Interior Group, 289 2bbl, C-4 Auto, Console and what else? I guess I am looking for things like visibility group, stripes, rocker moulding, engine details and anything else you can send my way.

I will also say that I have enjoyed being a "silent listener" to the threads that occur on this site. I am a 1st generation junkie (also have a Sept. 64 K-Code convertible) and I have gleaned so much from all of you as you discuss your cars and how to restore them.

For concours details, I don't think you will find a better place than this site, which covers all years of Mustangs and variations.

It would help to get an idea of what you are starting with and then help you lay our a plan.  If you follow the collective advice of the folks on this forum, you'll avoid costly mistakes and most likely be able to build a gold level car.

Hello fellow RMCF member!  Welcome to the forum.  You will be impressed with the level of knowledge and helpfulness from the members here.  That car should be fun to restore!  It certainly is rare.  Do you have Jim Smarts Production Guide?  It is a bit outdated, but I believe according to it, there are only a few examples known to still exist.

Call if you need some local help!

Thanks guys for the encouragement and replies. Ken, I will look you up as I have questions since you are so close.
My plan for the car right now is to take care of the rust cancer first and get it in reliable running shape so I can trust it to drive places farther than a few miles away. The interior is in fair shape (no rips, tears or major wear) except for the dash...it has been cut for another stereo so I will have to take care of that sometime. This is going to be a slow progression that one of my daughters and I can enjoy doing together. She is 13 and has the same bug I do for these cars. Once the body is in basic shape & primer, we will start at one area and begin the process of renewing and restoring, cleaning, painting and making it look like new. The goal is to have a car ready for paint in about 4 years and enjoy driving it along the way.

I haven't been able to find a copy of Jim Smart's book "In Search of Mustangs" but are there other resources you can point me towards? I definitely will be posting more questions as we move through the process.

Thanks in advance

Sorry for bringing this old thread up, but i think here's a misunderstanding no one noticed yet.

I am the proud newest owner of one of the Anniversary Gold Mustangs celebrating the Millionth Mustang being "born" in 1966. Mine is the Denver, CO car DSO# 511111.

The Anniversary Mustangs had the DSO code 331111, didn't they?
So this car would indeed be a special paint order, but no Anniversary Mustang, right?

Paul,

From what I've read so far on the Anniversary Specials, (3) have been found with the 331111, (1) 531111, (1) 73111, and now this 511111. All were produced on March 29, 1966 at San Jose. Of the two 331111 in Smart's Production Guide, both are coupes with Pony Interiors. One is  a black 66A trim and the other is a parchment and black F6A. Both are C-codes with automatic transmission and 2:80 gears. I'm not sure about the others.

Yes, My car is a March 29th SJ car with auto, 2:80 gears, Black Pony Interior with the original woodgrain appointments, Code, PS, Power Drum brakes and lots of Anniversary Gold paint underneath about three really bad Earl Schibe type paint jobs. Everywhere I sand down to work on this car, there is gold paint as the bottom layer except where it was patched in the rear quarters and front fender. 198,000 well documented miles on this baby and still going strong...suspension rebuild about 30K ago but the engine is original and no smoke or loss. The original owner just couldn't pass up that gold paint sitting on the lot on his way home from work in Colorado one day, stopped in immediately and bought the car that day. He drove it daily, his son drove it daily...about 10 years in CO, another 12 in Arizona, moved it to OR and sold immediately to the guy I bought it from who knew what it was and had it in storage for the last 18 years until I bough it to restore this year. This guy has another one with a Salt Lake DSO if I remember right and a White Pony interior. Mine was the "rougher" of the two.

So this was my fault - sorry!  :-[
The sources i found on the web always said the DSO has to be 331111 (f.e. a thread on VMF) - good to know it is not that easy!

@FunStang65: Congratulations to this great car! Wish my car would be that well documented.

Have you been able to ID the paint code they originally used?

I personally don't have the the paint code in my possession but the friend of mine with the other car I spoke of has done the research and has in his possession the exact paint mix code to reproduce that very special "Anniversary Gold" paint.

I have original documentation of ownership and have all the options that this car came with.  Just installed the original motor (rebuilt) and am getting ready to fire it up.  It's great to own such a rare piece of history.
