Power steering pump help
« on: February 15, 2012, 05:21:28 PM »
I had a leak from the gasket between the body and the pump reservoir housing last fall. I took the pump apart and replaced the seals. I reinstalled the pump and fired her up to be sure everything was good. And no leaks from the housing, at least right away.

But I've developed another leak. This one is right behind the pulley. I didn't replace this seal as # 1 there was no leak there ( don't fix what isn't broken ) and # 2 I couldn't figure out how to get that seal out. I've attached a diagram below. The seal in questions is number 38592.

How is this seal replaced? This looks like a pressed seal on the shaft. Does the shaft need to be removed and the seal pressed off?

The front seal is pressed into the cast housing.  Can be tapped out and a new one installed.  Not very difficult at all, just requires complete dis-assembly of the pump.

How is the shaft removed from the front housing?  Is it pressed out or can I remove the shaft and then take the front housing to a machine shop?
