68 horn ring

Just bought a pretty nice original complete standard steering wheel. ($50, I thought is was a great price!). 

The horn ring is in OK shape but has some scuffs/bubbles.  I believe the original finish was a "satin", so polishing is not an option.

How to restore?

Believe the finish is the same as the '68 convertible visor brackets which I think has been discussed here before.  It's some kind of nickel plating if I recall correctly.  Tim Lea probably can help.

As far as restoration, only way would be to strip and re-plate.  You'd be better off buying an NOS one, they usually sell for around $75-150.

Honestly the way it blasts right off I'm not so sure it was plated as much as something that was sprayed or maybe electroplated. I don't think its the same process as the satin chrome of visor brackets. I typically refinish with argent and it looks awesome

Well... oddly that ones way too easy!

I can satin nickle plate here, but think it would be too shiny.  I have plenty of argent and access to a media blaster so will give it a go today!

Although going NOS I'd an option I noticed that the replacement piece is slightly different in shape at the spoke ends where it meets the ring. Minor and luckily covered by the pad. The hub is also a little different but covered as well. If you paint yours remember that the plated finish is not smooth. It's rough to the touch.
