67 GT Fog Lamp Bars: How do I paint over the chrome???
« on: December 28, 2011, 07:15:29 PM »
After having rechromed the original GT fog lamp bars, I am not sure how to repaint the top of the flat horizontal surface (silver/argent color). Help?  I know that paint does not stick well (if at all) to chrome. Is a self-etching primer sufficient over the new chrome or do I have to take a grinder to the fresh chrome in order for the new paint to stick? What has worked for other folks? Advice appreciated.

Just paint it with the argent. Mask the area and do it on a warm day. I've done my 65 GT and 66 GT fog lights that way with no problem along with a couple of other chrome then painted items. Yes, you can scrape off the paint, but that's a good thing if you make a slight error. Chrome is forgiving.

mask it. scuff it with gray pad. use an adhesion promoter then paint. should be just fine.

Thanks guys!

Probably a dumb question, but what specific product are you referring to when you say to use an adhesion promoter?

I wonder how much "adhesion promoter" Ford specifications called for? If you look at factory, in this case I would assume a sub-contractor, chromed then painted items, the masking was done quick, cheap and efficiently before painting, which was also done quick, cheap and efficiently, no extra steps or materials.
