68 fender tag
« on: February 11, 2012, 04:39:13 PM »
I'm looking at a 68 GT350 project.  The fender VIN tag has two numbers on it, the correct Shelby style VIN, just the VIN no -xxxxx after it.  It is stamped above the box where I have seen most (not many, no expert) so it sits below the snake emblem and above the box is stamped over the text "Vehicle Serial Number".

There is a second longer 14 character number (alphanumeric) stamped in the box.

The font and reverese stamping looks like others I have seen.

Red flag???

With these cars, anything unusual should be researched.  There are many odd things but they are not always red flags.

If you are serious about purchasing this car, I suggest you gather together as much information and photos you can find and head over to

saacforum.com

and post your question in the 68 section. Lots of experts hang out there.

Good luck!

Thanks, I was not looking but it came up out of a sale of a PS pulley...  :o

Supposedly "complete" but the phots show some replaced steel (rear 1/4s), colors don't match Marti (not a huge deal but...) but supposedly in the registry...

Looks like your being careful - GOOD

Does it happen to be a very early car? If so that might explain the double VIN

Does it look more like the upper example shown below?

Jeff, yes as the upper. been looking further on the web and it is the early dual stamp, had not known of that varaint before.

And to drop the coin, i'll be asking a lot of questions.  Caveat emptor!

Now to decide if I can afford a 5th Mustang and a Shelby to boot!  ;)
