Ash tray problem
« on: October 12, 2011, 11:25:46 PM »
One of my gremlins to take care of was a poorly fitting ashtray in the dash. I wasn't happy with the paint on it so stripped it last night and primed it. While at the shop today grabbed it and also another one I had on the shelf. It was s bit rusty but it was black so suspected it could be the original. First tried the refinished one and it still didn't fit right. So I tried the other. Fit the opening with room to spare. Put them side by side and noticed the one which didn't want to fit was 1/4" longer. This one fits side to side nicer but too long. Looked at the back side and they are different withe the way the cover is bent over the receptacle. Did I refinish a 67? Were the dash openings different? Stripped the rough one of paint and will try evaporust overnight to see if I get rid of rust. I presume the receptacle is a zinc finish?

67 and 68 ashtrays are different. Sounds like you got a 67. Look at the front of the plated receptacle. Where the metal is bent over and the two pieces come together, are they almost touching or 1/2" apart?

Tim the one which doesn't fit has about a 3/32" gap between the two side pieces at the top. The top of the cover bends over just a touch and meets the receptacle immediately. Nce smooth transition.

So the one on the left is a 67 and the one on the right a 68?

Yes, that is correct. And as you noted earlier, the Dash colored Door is a 1/4" Different in height between the years.
