1966 Air Cleaner Painted Factory Correct
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:05:56 AM »
I am going to repaint my air cleaner on my late manufactured 6 cylinder air cleaner and I need a little guidance. I know the top (mine is without a snorkel) should be Ford Dark Blue and so should the base be; but what about the inside of the top cover...it should not be painted at all right? Mine has never been redone and the inside appears never to have had paint on it...apparently just left natural metal. However in today's times...what should I do to it to make it factory correct and yet not leave it prone to rust? Any thoughts anyone? Please help.

The top and bottom should all be the same color..even the inside...All Ford Corporate Blue.
Tip: Paint the insides first, Then the outsides... Pretty self explanitory..

All insides were always painted, but have seen many examples where the insides were just a "light dusting" of paint fading to bare metal...but not all examples.  Most were fully painted. I would definately go with less coats on the inside though..

Should the gray primer be used before painting with the blue? Please help me here as I have never repainted one of these and want to make certain I do it correctly. Also, if the inside is painted won't the paint crack and dry with the heat and possibly fall into and do damage to the carburetor over time? Thanks, Johnnie

No primer or paint inside. It is bare metal.I guess you could clear coat it as the inside isn't looked at when judging.
