68 Tilt Column
« on: July 31, 2011, 11:59:34 PM »
I've been working on the interior today and trying to finish up the dash and steering column. I have a couple of parts and cant remember where they go. The illustrations in the shop manual don't cover these and the Osborn manual is pretty much the same pics. So any help would be appreciated. I know where the long narrow cover goes but cant figure out the small metal cover or the U shaped saddle. I've tried to fit it around the tube of the column where I see two studs. It doesn't want to fit. Maybe this piece is from a standard column and I just painted it as part of an interior batch of painting. The last pic shows how it is mounted with the big bracket but there are two studs in back and one even has the end painted white (like a paint daub).

The long one is the wire cover for a non tilt column. The mount is for a 67 column and the small cover goes in the upper  column where theturn signal stalk screws in. Marty

ps: when you get the correct wire cover and bracket let us know and I'll give you a small detail that 98% of the restored cars we see are missing   ;)

Marty and Tim. The pieces shown on the cardboard are miscl parts I thought were for the tilt column. Take a look at the bottom pic as that is the bracket and the cover when I pulled the complete unit from my old fastback GT car so I could use it in the convert. I needed the extra leg clearance so a tilt column was required just to make it drivable. Pulled as a complete unit along with the wiring and vacume lines as it came from the factory.

The small cover I figured out when I noticed the opening at the stalk and the indents for the pin/tabs. I hate how the stalk rusted over the years. How bad is it of a job to remove the stalk to chrome plate it? I still have to swap out the steering wheels but waiting to get the final alignment so I can index it to have the spokes horizontal when the wheels are pointing straight.

So whats the secret?

In your bottom picture it looks like the wire and wire cover are under the column mount? That is not correct. Here is a picture of how it should go. Marty

Tim you are correct about the way it is installed. I guess I can switch that.
