65 Steel Wheel Identification
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:29:20 PM »
My 64 1/2 convertible that I bought three years ago came with styled-steel wheels. I'm looking to remove these and put on the standard 5-lug wheel for V8s but I don't know how to correctly identify an original early 65 mustang wheel.  I have a line on a set for sale but I'd like some help with telling if they are original. The wheel info I have (no pictures yet) is:

- 64/65 14" x 5.5", 5 bolt standard wheel, Factory riveted original, date 4MD(1964, April) set of 5

There was one regular wheel that came with the car (pictures below), but I'm not sure if it's original.

Thanks!

I don't recognize the stampings on the whell you provided pics of.  The wheels I have seen normally have the Ford script logo stamped into them with the date code right below the logo.  I don'thave a pic of my wheels but this auction shows what a typical stamping looks like:

The coding and stampings shown in your picture are very similar to a 72-+ wheel I looked at the other day on a space saver

Thanks for the great feedback. How about the date codes? The seller says the wheel date code of 4MD is 1964, April. Wouldn't this be 1964, December, 4th week? I'm not sure what the 4MD stamp translates to.

I did a search on the site and found another post that answered the date code, the M stands for Motor Wheel Corp. So the 4MD would be April 1964.

You are correct, 4MD is for April of 64.  I came across a lot of that date code here in AZ while I was trying to look for 4MK. Not sure if it matters or not, but how does one tell if the car originally came with either 13 inch or 14 inch rims?

Pretty sure that V8 cars would have had 14", but some 6 cyl had 13" early in production.  Maybe someone has some documentation to help.
