Formal database ??
« on: July 21, 2011, 10:50:44 AM »
I'm not sure of the dynamics in play, but was wondering why there isn't a formal database hosted somewhere that contains information about about each component for each year/factory/model, with pictures, discussion, debate, etc.  It could be done in the form of a WIKI or some other existing open source software.

Is it because there are books to be sold, or that it's just too big of a project, or is it something that just hasn't happened yet?

This is an honest question, not meant to step on any toes.

Been discussed many times over the year and having this site is the biggest step we've taken in that direction.  The goal is to eventually have something here that breaks things down into an easy to search/use format.  It will be a huge undertaking and require efforts from many of us.

As Charles posted its something that has been discussed many many times.

Its a VERY big somewhat unrewarding project that begs for time as do so many other good projects here. Just monitoring the project to make sure all of the information is correct will be a major dedication of time. Not sure if we're all comfortable with providing some incorrect information in a rush to get out as much information as possible.

And of course there is always the challenge of getting information from those who have spent tens of thousands of dollars and hours to collect the info to give it away for free.   Guess it would be like asking each of us to sponsor a project for thousands of dollars ;)
