clearance between gas tank and fuel line
« on: June 26, 2011, 10:47:28 PM »
Since I had the gas tank out to clean it up I figured I would address a concern I had with the muffler install. Initially when we attached the muffler it was perpendicular to the ground. Which meant the rubber fuel line touched the back of the muffler. So I loosened the clamps and tried twisting the muffler forward giving it a bit of a tilt. I managed to get about 2 1/4" between the line and the muffler. Is this adequet? It doesn't want to go any further forward.

It sounds like it is more then adequate. The assemblyline manuals chassis book gives a illustration and measurements of minimum distances betwen the exhaust transverse and the fuel line. Bob

I think that the angle of the muffler is 11 degrees forward at the top if you want to be precise.

I think I'll ask my son to work out the geometry equation to verify that angle.

When Ford service parts were available there were notches and alignment tabs on all of the exhaust parts that made them "stupid proof" to install.  With current replacement parts it is just your best judgement as to how each part fits on the adjacent part  - with the exception of the exhaust systems that Scott Fuller manufactures, which do have the original type alignment tabs and notches.  I think that it is difficult for even an  experienced enthusiast to distinguish Scott's parts from factory originals.

I have scotts h pipe installed but the resonators, muffler and tail extensions are no name repops from the eighties. I have an original c8 muffler with a good date but since I want to drive this car some I will leave it off for now. May compliment the muffler with the rest of scotts exhaust pipes.

The Ford engineering drawings show the tab on the resonator pipes will position the muffler at a 6.5-degree angle where the top of the transverse muffler will be forward of the bottom of the muffler when viewed from the side.

Scott I loosened up the clamps And pushed the top as far forward as it would go.
