1970 Mustang tail light panel
« on: February 28, 2025, 02:48:56 PM »
Hello: I am trying to figure out the 1970 taillight panel differences. Specifically, I am wondering about the chrome trim, 2 piece upper (D0ZZ 65423A82-A) and single piece (D0ZZ 65423A84-A) lower. Were these stock on all 70's or just specific models? I know they were not on Boss 302's. Are they part of the 'honeycomb' (DOZZ 65423B70-A) insert that I believe was Mach 1 only? Perhaps involved with retaining the honeycomb panel or was there fasteners on that panel itself? I have not been able to find a picture or diagram of the panel.
 Thank you in advance.

You are correct in your assumptions. It is for the Mach 1 honeycomb panel. The fasteners slide into the chrome molding and fasteners go through the body panel and held on by acorn nuts.

Did you look in the 1970 Mustang body assembly manual? There are installation pictures on Ford drawing numbers NO-500-2 and NO-500-3.  The diagram pictured here shows the fastener part numbers; the assembly manual is more detailed.

According to the MPC (picture attached), these moldings were only used on body styles 65E (Grande) and 63C (Mach I).

Thank you both for the additional information. I do have a MPC and looked at the page you attached. I do not have an assembly manual but will try to find it as from your reply it shows the fasteners which I would like to see. As you stated, used on 63B and 65E, so the Grande got the honeycomb as well? I seem to remember Mach 1 designation on it? My memory could be wrong on that.

Rickmustang: Just to clarify, the honeycomb panel is held on by the chrome moldings only? No other fasteners through the rear panel for the honeycomb plastic insert?

With the additional holes for the moldings and perhaps some for the insert would these models have gotten a unique taillight panel, or would the line have looked after drilling/attaching this trim?

For future reference, the "Ford Assembly Manual" drawing numbers use a number in the second position, not a letter, so it not a NO (the letter "O"), it's a N0 the number 0 (a zero). This is VERY important in using any search feature, like in this forum, or any where on the internet (like e-bay). This numeric "thing" also applies to Ford engineering part numbers and Ford service stock numbers - examples "C6ZF-9510-C" (a 1966 Mustang 289HP carburetor) or "D0OF-12127-AA" (a 1970 distributor for a 429 4V CJ originally used on a 1970 Fairlane - the 0 - a zero and the letter "O", but also used on a Mustang).
To help in your search on this forum, look in the Library under topic "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheet 69-70". You will find two files, one identified by "AP06.xlsx" (it's by "Application", aka where the part is used, the 06 is the revision) and a second by Ford part number- "PN06.xslx".

Correct. The fasteners hold the chrome trim on, and the chrome holds the honeycomb panel to the body.
