Unrestored pics or Member Restoration Where to Post Question
« on: January 17, 2025, 08:50:31 PM »
Wanted to post this here before possibly starting a thread in the unrestored picture section.

I have recently bought a one owner 65 Fastback, that seems to be mostly untouched, at least to me. This car needs a total restoration, but I will need to buy any manuals that are needed for correct assembly, finishes, etc. I would also like to be pointed in the right direction on what books/manuals that I may need.

Is there any interest in pics of anything on this car that may help someone? I can?t guarantee that something hasn?t been changed, and I will learn in the process also.

Thanks.

First - Welcome to the site. Hope you find it helpful in your concours and original detail orientated questions and tasks. Also THANKS for already including the cars information in your signature. Proves that someone reads earlier posts  :)

For books there are few that will do much good since there can be a lot of small differences between plants and years and few if any books or rules focus that closely. May be find for the local shows and such but here were go much further. You will find that a combination of good solid sites populated with knowledgeable members willing to share and to teach should provide the best current understanding of how these cars were built in combination with the factory assembly manuals for your year. Take the info in the manuals and ask questions to see if it applies to your specific car. Drawings don't always show exactly what was done by the workers so that is where pictures of unrestored cars built the same plant and about the same time period help improve our understanding and help you make better choices.

Yours is a common question and gets even asked more since the internet became available since many assume that there should be a book, site or something else where all the details are known, documented and organized perfectly for your needs. Sorry, as we say, there is no easy button.

As for pictures of what you have to start with you have two choices here on this site. You can start a thread in the unrestored area of the site and just post pictures of just about every and any thing you see interesting and confirmed it is original. Not normally a place where a lot of discussion or questions take place. The other option is to start your own thread on the cars in the Members Restoration/Builds section where there is often a lot of discussion and sharing about your specific cars. At times certain discussions are separated and moved to another area where more eyes see it in the hope of diving deeper on that particular subject.

Bottom line is that no matter which one you choose I/we can always move the thread or discussions to the other choice if it develops outside of the "normal" sort of thing for that specific section

Again Welcome

Thanks for the welcome Jeff.

I have never restored a car, so this will be interesting for me, and a long lasting project I?m sure. I will start a build thread eventually when I start on the car, so I can ask questions, and to document the build.

Thanks!

As Jeff stated, welcome.
As to documents, get a set of "1965 Mustang Assembly Manuals". Available manuals for 1965 Mustangs are Body, Interior, Electrical and Engine. Also available are 1964-65 Weld & Sealant and Chassis manuals. Get the paper version. It's easier to mark up than the CD version. I recommend "National Parts Depot" https://www.npdlink.com/ as an excellent source for most items (one of the top executives is a member of this forum).
Learn to use the forums library and search feature as well.
