drum brake backing plates
« on: April 09, 2024, 10:15:03 PM »
This a generic question, has anybody seen, are there photos of, numbers stamped on the backing plate outsides in the small recess near adjustor hole? 2 different Fords I have done have a 4 digit number. Wonder how wide spread it might be.

If you mean the numbers that identify the backing plates then yes . I am under the impression that the numbers  have to do with identification for diameter and brake pad width.  However I don't know of a comprehensive listing with applications. For example I only keep track of the few unique different ones for the Shelby applications.

Agree with the identification. Two makers and two different practices as far as marking

If your are number by the brake adjusting hole then they are likely Bendix made

These are from my early 67 ( but Aug 66 ) S code Convt.  One Bendix, one Kelsey-Hayes.

Neither have numbers.

I currently have 8 rear backing plates.  A mixture of Bendix 317558 317559 and KH 71086 71085

Only one of them has small number, and a letter, stamped near the adjusting hole.

On a side note,  i have a Bendix 323369 that appears identical to a 317558.  I tried but cantdetermine its original and proper application.  It functioned on my 69 Gt500 for 10 years but not its correct home.  I once owned a torino with a 9 inch so maybe i cross pollinated it back when.

Besides the Bendix and Kelsey Hayes stampings have also seen the date code stamps on the backing plates stamped on the flat spot as shown in the previous post by Shelby50069.  Decoded would be:
3468 = 346th day of 1968
3478 = 347th day of 1968

Using the Julian calendar that would be December 11 and December 12th 1968 so will assume the build date of the car is after that date.

Here is a photo of another one I had here:

Yep, you later guys nailed. Just like what I found. Is it safe to say all( generally speaking) backing plates would have this?

If I understand your statement above - Yes there were only two providers and they followed the same practices for all of theirs during this time period
