70 428CJ Question about emissions sticker
« on: April 11, 2024, 03:28:46 PM »
I was wondering if it is appropriate to have an emission sticker on the valve cover of my 1970 428 SCJ?

Is it a current state inspection type sticker? If so, probable yes. If it's a Ford sticker, probably yes, or it should be in a different location. If it's an older state sticker, I would remove it.

It?s a Ford decal. I believe that it may have the engine timing as well as other text. I have seen pictures with this sticker on the Left valve cover towards the front. However, I have never seen an example of a 428 SCJ with aluminum valve covers, displaying the decal.

See plenty of them on restored cars but here are a couple of examples on unrestored 70 428CJ Mustangs. Not much left but believe both are the remains of the original timing/emission stickers. Hope this helps

Jeff's photos show original stickers. Restored vehicles rarely get the details right.

I searched on the 428CJ website and found info on it (1970 Metuchen car)

1968 CJ - Owner and paint original. Dec 67 build in Dearborn. One of 50 135 Cobra Jets. Ford engineering used it for 8 mos. to resolve problems in the 50 early car build. Ford by-passed the normal sign off to get cars to the Winternationals drag race.

One thing to consider. Since the engines were all built at the same plant this detail would the same no matter the car plant if built during the same time period.

the decal is D0OE-9C485-J
I helped ECS make them some years back, they still sell them.
when installed in the factory position, it was typical on the originals to have an elliptical piece of the decal get punched out on the bottom area when someone used a socket to tighten the valve cover bolt below it.

Tucson Bruce, are you the Bruce of 428CJ Convertible fame?  (Don't want to post any names without an OK ....) If so, I think I loaned you a valve cover way back to have that decal made. (In return, you found me the REALLY hard to find fan clutch for my 70 CJ, thanks' again) I'm sure I still have that Valve cover somewhere, I'll dig it out and posts some pic's. It came off a really original low mileage wrecked car in the early 1980's. I have pics of 4 or 5 original decals on cars, every one is missing the piece over the valve cover boss ....   John

Thats  2 70 mustang cj long time experts  talking there.  Lots of running changes in the  rare 70 model year and a much different car than the more common 69 model. There are 4 different 70 mustang owners manuals compared to 2 69 owners manuals yet 5 times more 69 cars than 70 models. Welcome to the CMF forum bruce so now i dont have to worry about  calling to early getting u out of bed with the western time zone changes. It was always fun going to the AZ rustfree junkyards with you back in the good ole days before the big scrap metal crush. Hidden Valley and desert valley yards were the biggest and best junk yards ever and u could spend all day there looking for parts back in the 80s and 90s anyway.

Digging around looking for some stuff, went thru my 70 valve covers .....  Here's the best example I have of an original emissions decal on the drivers side cover. (these covers were off a low mileage 70CJ  parted out in 1983 after an accident in the mid 1970's) Every example I have (4-5 sets of covers, pics of about a dozen more) has that chunk of sticker missing over the recess for the valve cover bolt.    John
