This sounds crude, just open it about 1/3rd open and give it a good quick shove from the side towards the bigger gap. If it's not painted you can, while partially open, pry it over with a piece of wood. Either way, just use baby steps, they usually don't take a lot to move.
+1 Shims aren't factory and the trunk lid provides allot of leverage
I usually dont disagree with you, Jeff. But during the disassembly of my 70 Mach which from all evidence I saw had never had the body panels removed I found shims. They look like the shims used between the upper control arm and the shock tower under one side of the cowl panel and the fender on the same side.
Sorry I thought the discussion was focused on the trunk lid and in this case the attachment of the trunk hinge to uni-body. Was not referring to elsewhere on the body
