Hello all,

There is an article in the Mustang Times archive, by Rick Mitchell for the correct accent stripes for the Sprint 200.   I'll attach the link here.  http://mustangtimes.net/11-6/pg32.pdf

Mine still has the original paint with the stripe.   The paint is not perfect and still needs TLC, but I have been focused on getting it running.  If you need specific pics of a certain area, let me know and I will try to help.

Great to see those pics, Tony.   It is good to see the engine pics.  My Sprint 200 is not in my garage, so I have a hard time going out to look.  The only chrome that mine had was the chrome top air cleaner.   Although the chrome is starting to come off in a few places, it is original.   Any suggestions on making it look better?

I converted to disc brakes and a dual bowl mc, but still have the original mc and the cap was sort of a zinc plated.

Thanks for the link, Steve. The last one worked fine for me. And the article info was exactly the info I was looking for.

Say, regarding your air cleaner: does it have a snorkel or not? And how about the date code in the base?

Since 1966 Sprint 200 cars are such a hot topic this week, I thought that I'd share the picture below. This came from an original car and its an Original 1966 Sprint 200 Dash Plaque. It is rarely seen. They actually came in the glovebox of most 1966 Sprint 200's, and the Dealer would have it engraved for the new owner with their name on it. Other dash plaques are out there, but are mostly newer made "repro" plaques. However nice that most of them are, What you see is an original below. The Ford crest is actually integral with the brass plaque and "molded" in. It is not put "on top" of the plaque...definately hard to fake.  I was lucky enough to obtain this one from its kind original owner.  I'm tempted to have it engraved with the original owner's name of my car, but I think that I will leave it alone in the event I can find someone that would like to repro it.

Interstingly enough, If you look at the Ford Crest, It is pretty much a late 1950's designed Ford crest.  Ford continued to use this crest for some dealer signs and items but ceased its use in the mid 1960's ...around late '66-Early '67 I have found from pictures and other dealer items.

The reason the link doesn't work is that there is a period at the end of the "pdf" in the URL.  Remove the period, and everything is great!

I was looking through the archives of the Mustang Times and in the June 1987 issue found and article by former Sprint Registry leader Rick Mitchell on two fastback versions, one being the oldest Sprint on record at the time with a date code of November 27, 1965.

Of the two Sprint fastbacks featured in the article, both of which were built in Metuchen, one was dated Jan. '66 and the other Nov. '65. What struck me as strange, given our recent conversations regarding air cleaners, is that one had a snorkel while the other did not!!!

It sure would warrant digging into this issue a little deeper.

I would'nt believe the Nov' 65 car unless I had prove.. That one would definately need to be validated.  I show no '66 Sprints being built until January 3rd, 1966 just from known examples...Kind of like a similar situation with the  05C '64 1/2 Mustang.  You need proof.

Tony,

Is there some way to absolutely verify a Sprint without the sales invoice? Even my car, which we have both inspected, is assumed to be a Sprint based upon the car's physical evidence. I have no sales invoice, so I cannot say irrefutably that the car is a Sprint. Every component on a Sprint could have been ordered on a regular 6-cylinder, except for the air cleaner (which can easily be changed out).

The article I quoted also stated another car in Mitchell's Registry had a date of Dec. 27th. What has Mitchell done with is data now that he no longer manages a Registry? Do you suppose he might have passed it along to Jim Smart?

Rick still holds all his own data as far as I know.  Most of his data was actually snail mailed to him...Pre-Internet days..lol... I have to give him a call.  I'm sure that he would help out.  I guess that he does'nt frequent the internet much. He does'nt have a listed e-mail address, Only snail mail... The website is coming along...but slow. My biggest decision right now is what software to use. I'm trying to get some good "registry" software from a guy with a registry website, but he has been real stingy with it. Supposedly Rick holds data on over 200 Sprints, while I hold 100, of cars I have seen or "verified". The day that I get it all together will be a good day. I'm working on it constantly No lack of pictures and originality stuff, That is for sure, but can always use more of course. I have some primo Metuchen Sprint stuff, Dearborn too. San Jose I am lacking a bit, but have some.

It's getting there..

Pete, You forget, I almost bought your car over ten years ago.  Trust me, Your car is a real Sprint. It had a "hands on" inspection...lol..

Putting aside the fact that somewhere 4 to 6 percent of Mustangs could have been optioned with the "Accent" group,  A Sprint woud also have to have all the right options.  Your car does, and it looked pretty original when I viewed it in the late 90's.

I know you are a little leary because someone put '65 mouldings on, but I would'nt worry about it.  Your car looked legit.

Could it be faked? Of course...Anything can be..but it takes quite a bit of trouble...

Thanks, Tony! There's nothing like a thorough going over by an expert. I can at least claim mine had that (lol).

My point though, was that the November Sprint seemed to have as good a "physical" inspection as you were able to give mine, foremost the quarter panel inspection. The car's owner at the time was a Holly Abbott from Pomona Park, Florida. Given the importance of such a find, it might be worth an attempt at contacting her. Looks like about an hour north of Orlando.

From the sounds of Mitchell's article, he seemed as shocked by the implications as you understandably are!

I'm not sure what I can do to help with the website, but if there's anything you might think of, let me know. I'm sure it's a drain on your valuable "free time". Delegate (lol).

I now have (2) 1966 Sprint broadcast sheets. Both are Metuchen cars, mine a 10E build and another a 18G. Both cars have the associated codes for the console, wire wheel covers, and accent stripe. There's no special notes on either build sheet that denote the Sprint option. However, both contain what may simply be an unusual coincidence: both have a 6 code in the Speedo Calib Metric Odometer Rental field. Most build sheets I've seen thus far are blank, with the exception of a 2 code on an export car (which I'm assuming signifies a kilometers/hr speedometer adjustment).

At first I thought the 6 on my build sheet might have meant that the car was originally build for a rental company such as Hertz or Avis. But now I'm beginning to wonder if it might signify the Sprint option, and this was simply the field Ford chose to house it.

More build sheet samples may further establish the pattern.  ;D Please keep them coming....

Back to the Oil filler cap....Should the '66 black cap have the round service decal on it or not? The photos that NEFaurora posted do not show any decal. I have seen them both ways. Please advise.....getting ready to go to MCA in Jacksonville with my 13 year old restoration. Stop by and say HI if you are there.  (I have removed the chrome oil filler cap, radiator cap as well as master Cylinder cap from my sprint)
