Topic: Seal? ID for 66 289 2V auto trans

I removed the oil pan in my 66 Coupe and found several broken pieces of what appears to be a seal of some kind.  Typically, when something like this is missing or broken in a car, it can't be good to run it without repair.  It's a dark yellow now and more of a hard plastic, but somewhat pliable but brittle.  Car is a late 66 SJ plant coupe, auto trans, p/b, p/s and 289 2V.  Any help to Id this would be helpful.  Photo attached.

Kinda looks like part of a timing gear. If it was in the transmission, it was a long way from home.

Definitely part of the camshaft timing chain sprocket, which likely was replaced with the later service replacement style.  I wouldn't even attempt to start it without pulling the timing cover to see what's going on in there.

I've already driven the car about 10 miles and seems to run great.  Another thing to note is the bottom curve of the piece is completely smooth and does not appear to have broken off of anything. I'll have a look at the sprocket though.

If your engine runs and the car drives, this sprocket piece is not from the CURRENT cam sprocket. A plausible explanation could be that someone replaced the original cam sprocket, without removing the oil pan, and the piece that you found is part of the original sprocket.
