Sport grip 500 steering wheel cover
« on: April 17, 2021, 02:06:09 PM »
Would anyone know of a source for this correct piece? Perhaps someone knows of an acceptable replacement that would minimize point deduction.

If you watch eBay every now and then someone will list an unused one from back in the day. The old ones are more shiny and smoother than the more recent ones.

This is the more recent kind that you will find is not quite right:

Yes the type "A" grip size for 15 1/2 wheel. The B is too wide. As mentioned the originals had smooth sections in place of the small texture in between the distinct grain as in the example cover. If I were judging a car with this cover and it was in good condition and laced properly then I might only mention the small difference rather than levy a deduction.

Would the Hertz cars have had the wheel wrap?
Accurate looking but not a Concours Restoration/build. See my build photo gallery at 69GT350 Hertz Build

All 69/70 Shelby's were meant to have the wheel wrap. That includes Hertz cars.

Interesting that they would put a cover over a rim blow wheel, but it is what it is.

It was a Shelby thing. It can be seen in all period Adv or Magazine article's where the wheel is shown if first hand observations from 1969 are not enough. I have not ever seen or heard of a 68 69/70 Shelby wheel without the wrap in any period piece.

Posted a couple of pictures the other elsewhere  and thought they would be helpful in this thread

Comparing the 500 Sport Grip logo and the "breath though holes"

A close up of a C8WY one

Here are what later versions or at least many look like Notice that the holes are not continuous but in staggered rows. This is what your going to typically find out there. Had a full case of those we bought back in the 80's. Owners/builders will often will often wrap the thin straps over the black areas to camouflage the lack ofholes

Hope this helps

I see some but is 3 1/2 inch too wide? For a 15 1/2 inch wheel?
