4-speed linkage at 3rd/4th gear lever
« on: July 03, 2023, 02:14:00 PM »
Application = 1970 Dearborn-built 428 CJ Mach1 4-speed

For 428, 4-speed application, does the 3rd/4th gear linkage (D0ZA-7326-E) enter the transmission lever (at case) from the "case side" or from the driver's side?

The osborne  assembly diagram only shows a 4-speed linkage diagram for small-black and in that scenario the 3rd/4th gear linkage enters the trans case lever from the "case side".

However,  page 16-04-02 of the 1970 Shop Manual shows this same linkage (D0ZA-7326-E) entering the case lever from the opposite side (admittedly page 16-04-02 Figure 1 is a generic/typical image).

--> Does anyone have a picture of the 4-speed linkages between the case levers and the shift tree for 1970 4-speed big block?

Vcode....Im pretty sure your second photo you posted here shows the one lever installed backwards.  Also doesnt match the photo you posted above it....

Thanks for the pictures!
Using what I believe to be the correct 0ZR-02B lever and D0ZA-7326-E linkage, there is absolutely NO way I can route the  linkage so it will enter the 3rd/4th-gear lever from the direction shown in the pictures you both provided (above). It does, however, perfectly route and fit if installed into the 3rd/4th-gear lever from the opposite direction.

What am I missing?

Is it possible Ford changed the D0ZA-7326-E linkage at some point?

I don't see any sign that a previous owner modified my linkages in any way. I am completely stumped...

Are you using a stock Hurst shifter or something else?  I dont see that part in your photos.  You can see some photos I posted in this article that should help narrow it down:

I'm using the stock Ford Hurst shifter bucket and the stock ford linkages.  The shift linkage I believe to be correct for 1970 4-speed big block 3rd/4th gear is D0ZA-7326-E.   Using a linkage stamped with that PN, it is physically impossible for me to route it as shown in the (fantastic!) pdf you provided.  The D0ZA-7326-E linkage I have will work, but it would connect to the 3rd/4th gear lever (at trans case) from the opposite direction as shown in your pdf.

I am totally stumped.  The D0ZA-7326-E linkage I have is not new... it's old, pitted and worn, hence I doubt it's an incorrectly manufactured reproduction.

I'm trying to figure out if there's an application wherein the D0ZA-7326-E rod I have is correct.

Are there any 428 owners out there who could comment on the routing of their 3rd/4th gear linkages?

Interesting that a 71 order form indicated you could order a wide or close ratio because all small blocks in 71 had wide ratio and all big blocks had close ratio.

You should post a picture of the shifter box and linkage. We may be able to determine what is not right with it.

The linkage you posted a picture of is not shaped the same as mine.  My linkage has an overall "curved" shape to it.  Your linkage is almost straight, except for that bit of dog-leg in the middle.

Is it possible the shape of your linkage was "manually adjusted" in the past?
