carburetor dashpot
« on: April 20, 2011, 07:02:00 PM »
I have a 289 engine, autolite 4100 carb, C4 transmission and A/C in my '65 coupe.  Do I need a anti stall dashpot on my carb?  I currently do not have one and was wondering what purpose a dashpot serves.  The shop manual doesn't really describe what the purpose is only how to adjust it.  I did a search on this forum for dashpot and saw that one commentator had installed a hot idle compensator in the PCV valve line.

thanks,

Matt

dashpot was only used with an automatic trans. its purpose was to prevent the throttle from slamming shut and possibly causing the engine to stall.

If you are stopped at a red traffic light, and the guy to your left takes off, and so do you.  Then you quickly realize your light is still red, and in a fraction of a second, you take your foot off the gas and stomp the brake.

This will almost always cause the engine to die... UNLESS YOU HAVE A DAMPENER (dashpot) to lower the throttle the last 5%,slowly.

There was an OEM one on Ebay a few weeks ago for $38.

I drove my 67 for about 30 years without one without any issues.  I only recently added one to make it look concourse correct.  However, I did not see any difference when I added it.

It's worthless it it ain't working.  If you have a WORKING one, and you have it adjusted right...IT"S SCHWEEEEET!

Rev the engine...instantly remove your foot off the gas...the RPM quickly goes to 900 and then S-L-O-W-L-Y eases down to a stable 600RPM idle in 2 or 3 seconds.

I bought 3 off Ebay, including a bad (new) one from Pony Carburetors, before I got a working one.  The working one I got was for an NOS 66 Chrysler product that was exactly like the Ford one except the threaded stem was longer.  I cut it on the lathe to the right length.
This is the exact one I bought  (Item #310309713437)  $50 Buy It Now.

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate your insight.  I understand what your talking about Bryan.  Mine will do pretty much the same thing if I gas it real quick at idle the engine will just about cut off until the idle circuit catches up with it.  So I can see where a dash pot would help.
