Rattle Can Finish on Rear Axle Housing
« on: February 05, 2023, 11:59:49 PM »
Is this typical for a rattle can finish? It seems splotchy to me. I removed the existing finish down to metal. Metal prepped, primed, sanded, cleaned, tack ragged and applied 2 light coats and 1 heavy wet coat. Does it need another coat or is this as good as it's going to get for a semi gloss black 2k in a can?

What I did on a similar-condition housing was to strip it to bare metal, dunk in rust remover such as EvapoRust or Rust-911, sanitize, 2K Black Epoxy sealer followed by 2K filler primer (masked off some areas like welds etc) sand to the black and repeated as necessary till minor pitting was gone. Shot another coat of black epoxy primer followed by a lacquer coat of semi-gloss black.

I agree with Carlite's tip about the plug being inserted during paint.
Otherwise, your finished product looks as good as anything Ford produced in 1966.
