That is why I depend on visual identification (long nose and short nose ) rather then a part number .

Here you go

So then my research is correct that the 68 302 Mustang uses the 164 tooth flywheel with C5AA-B bellhousing while the 68 Shelby GT350 uses the smaller 157 tooth flywheel with the C5DA-A bellhousing.
Weird but interesting as always.

Hi here is a picture of the underside of my car

Very nice underside there.
I noticed the trans is stamped with the RUG-N (GN) designation which is the close ratio 4 speed.
I thought the J code Mustangs came with the wide ratio RUG-E2 (GE) 4 speed.
Was that the original trans, a swap from another car, or did you paint the mark on there.

Actually, no the underside of the picture that I posted is of a 68 gt350. It has c5AA in it with a 164 tooth flywheel.  I don?t believe that when they were converted from Mustangs to Shelbys that they changed the fly wheel or bell housing, but  yes the transmission is  a close ratio Rug N. I think that would be changed when they converted these cars.  I would defer to Pete or other 68 350 experts to be sure that is an accurate statement

I do not think your research is correct and I don't read anything in the Shelby service bulletin that indicates that the 68 GT350 uses the 157 tooth flywheel and C5DA-A bellhousing. The bulletin has to do with a misprint in the MPC. This same mistake has plagued people buying starters for M/T 164 flywheel equipped cars still to this day.   The 68 GT350 J code is the same 302 4V engine as what came in the regular Mustang. Those engines used the 164 flywheel.

The post about the Shelby service bulletin shows that it uses the 157 tooth parts. The bellhousing number given is the old part number (not the engineering number) for the bellhousing which is the 157 tooth bell so it would seem to indicate they came with 157 tooth bells. Is that publication not trustworthy?

Oh it?s a Shelby picture, got it. I thought it was a Mustang.

Thanks so much Bob for your input (and everyone else also).

My whole purpose for this thread was to make certain that the 68 302 Mustangs and Shelbys came with the 164 tooth bellhousings.
I was having a hard time because it's hard to find cars with original parts in them, especially when looking at pictures.

I would have thought that the Mustangs and Shelbys would use the same parts in this area but kept seeing different stuff.
Plus that service bulletin is confusing because it seems like it's a genuine Ford or Shelby bulletin and it's indicating 157 tooth parts in the GT350.

Anyway, i'm going with both had 164 parts and unless i find different that's what i'm sticking with.
