About to restore the cast brackets that attach to the ?frame? on my 6/64 Dearborn car and curious about the correct finish of these. I believe they were unpainted, but were they dark from a heat treatment or just the lighter color of fresh cast iron?

Yes bare cast iron. I don't believe that they were heat treated or very dark in shade . I have not seen anything that would make me think that they had anything other then the typical cast iron finish .
