67 battery tray area
« on: December 08, 2020, 09:19:27 PM »
67 S code April 67 SJ
After changing my battery tray and transfering  over the holes I noticed  the solenoid was originally mounted  lower than most, and also in the wrong  spot, because  they could only  use 1 mounting hole, the other  dimple is there but never drilled out
Also  above that, I circled a area that has 2 holes, one is pierced and the other punched, I don't  remember what was there,on the back  side you can see where the fastener was located  because there is no sound deadening in that spot

First guess would be the original solenoid mounting hole (forward most) and a second one made by someone when the first one stripped out

Often owners relocated the solenoid due to stripped holes

Could your second (rearward hole) be where the panel is cut. Can't tell the orientation exactly since the edge is also trimmed away and you can see the collapse feature on your panel

The holes were made using a punch so that there was more metal to grip screw threads then just the edge of a drilled hole . Sometimes you can rejuvenate a striped out hole by hammering the hole on the backside .It is not as good as a original punched hole but at least it can many times add more metal to the diameter of the stripped hole so that the screw threads can grab.

John, I think Jeff's thoughts match what I suspected in our private messages, that the solenoid mounts were drilled out (just below original location).
It looks to me that the rear hole is covered or is missing under the white circle drawn on the image.

I am not sure if the lower hole is for the 390 smog filter canister or is where the "D" ring (plastic) for holding the alternator/wiring harnesses so maybe others can clarify.
Attached image is of my best first guess.

I look at lots of photos of this area and found this,67 GT500, fastback, built 2 weeks before mine, what is mounted beside the solenoid

That is a terminal strip/junction block for the Shelby amp gauge. Sourced from a early Lincoln. Power for the car is connected to the junction block instead of the solenoid then routed through the amp gauge before returning back to the solenoid. it is easily damaged as in the picture from taking the battery in and out. It was moved on later Shelby's.

Would not be for the smog canister - wrong location. Could just be someone with a drill again for some other unknown reason or addition to the car  at some point in the past
