70 Cowl Paint transition?
« on: October 26, 2022, 05:07:33 PM »
Has looked around, but came up empty!

Anyone have some pics of the paint transition from the engine compartment to the dashboard without the cowlpanel in place?

70 Convertible Dearborn buildt Oct 69.

Thanks
John

Typically there isn't one. It appears to address body color being visible through the cowl grill and to black out the bottom of the windsheild opening painters just extended the engine compartment black all the way into the car along the lower edge

Posted previously but understand they can be difficult to find but thanks for trying

Two examples from the same production month as your car

Perfect.
How far to the side and up the windshield frame does the paint go?
Did they use some type of cover to protect any areas?

Thanks

John

How far to the side and up the windshield frame does the paint go?

Will look (will take some time) to see what I can document as far as how high up the pillars the black goes on cars from your cars period

Do have one of those examples but only shows black (over blue) at the base of the  pillar on the interior side but will need to see what other pictures I have further up

Do have later cars where the painter didn't go up the pillars but that same painter only covered the top of the dash pad ledge and not around to the rear facing surface. Just didn't pay attention or was lazy

Did they use some type of cover to protect any areas?

We can see in some of the pictures they used some masking paper on the exterior edge of the cowl black and a wide piece of tape that retained it on the outer edge of the cowl area under where the fender will be. It appears that some painters well inside the masking paper so on those cars the paint process didn't leave a crisp paint edge

We'll see what turns up

John on verts the big wide  convertible mouldings cover more windshield area on sides and top so not as visible as coupe fastback. The later cowl blackout was suppose to hide the body color seen around the  black dash pad defroster openings so make sure black goes all the way to  the rear edge of the metal.

Getting around and back to this request here are some original paint examples. Like many things there is what was meant or instructed to be done and what individuals assigned to the task (three plus fill in personnel) we can see that they were not always successful at fulfilling the tasks when it comes to paint and or sealants -This year and plant

Here is the example closest to when you car was built - unfortunately no pictures if the A pillars. This painter did take the effort to wrap the black paint around and to cover the rear facing surfaces of that small dash lip

0F1178xx

Later examples

0F05M192xx In this case like some other black out details it appears that an inspector caught that there was not enough or any black out and they or another worker fixed it with a buckt of paint and a paint brush that they had around for this very purpose - fixing mistakes

Convertible example 0F03F1736xx. Rear facing area not shot with the engine compartment black. The reflection in the windshield makes the coverage easier to see.
