« on: May 04, 2015, 03:54:49 PM »
Where can i buy the 65-67  factory 4 speed shifter handle reverse bushings ,there are two per shifter handle they are located in the chrome (T) that you would pull up on before moving the shifter handle into reverse, i think they are black plastic .thanks,  chuck.

To install them, you have to remove the shift lockout "wire rope", which is silver-soldered.  That bushing is not reproduced for sale, but folks like Bill Healy repairs them.  He has moved from Olney, MD to either N or S. Carolina, IIRC.  He did mine, and it was great to have it working the way it is supposed to!

Was just looking around for something like this myself as I have a super nice original 4sp shifter, but the bushing is worn at the top and it vibrates when driving.  Bill does install a sleeve, but I notice that his do not have the bottom spacer like originals do.

In the past, I've bought NOS shift handles that have the correct bushing, they are getting a little more expensive these days though.

Has anyone tried to do the silver soldering on the cable end?

Did the early 64.5 4 speed shifter handle have the reverse lockout bushing as the 65-67 did

Charles

I have silver soldered a new wire (bicycle brake cable) to repair one with a broken wire.  I eventually got the silver solder to stick and work, but I was never able to get the whole thing as tight as an original.  Very hard (for me) to pull the cable tight enough and still have room to do the soldering.  Part of this may be due to working alone or not making some sort of fixture.  I think I just clamped the cable with vise grips while soldering.

Anyway, it can be done and maybe you will find a way to make the wire tighter.

Check with your local jewelers - ones who make and repair jewelry, not a retail-only store. They will have the proper torch and brazing compounds, not to mention lots of experience.  ;)

If you have the right equipment and brazing paste, it's not any more difficult than common electrical or plumbing soldering. The principle is the same, just at a higher temperature.

I want to bring this back up. Is it O rings or bushings inside the handle? Can someone measure the pieces, then we may can get some made, just my thoughts.

Thanks

As I recall it's a one piece step bushing.
The top one just slides out.
I think a 3D printed version would work.

(I really don't need another project right now.l)
