Painting the 69 428CJ engine, pics added
« on: July 21, 2022, 03:42:16 PM »
Trying to get the motor ready for primer and I'm having trouble with it flashing with rust after I clean it. I've been using mineral spirits with a brass bristle brush followed by Brake kleen and its flashing mostly around the exhaust flanges where it had developed some light surface rust. What can I use to stop the flash and that can be primed over without removing? Metal prep? Evaporust? ???? As a side note, our humidity is pretty low right now but its 102 degrees. Its supposed to be in the low to mid 70's tomorrow morning which is when I  plan on spraying the primer.

Try a wire brush to remove the "rust", then paint it immediately. Forget the primer.

+1 .You don't need to use the primer. The factory did not use it ether.

+/ :)  Primer will just hide more of the details and make the final product look more like it was dipped in paint/plastic. Not the end look  your looking for

Needing to know if the stud in the first pic gets painted as well as the elbow in the second pic. Thanks!

Yes to both - stud and elbow.  Tape off the end of the elbow for the hose would be my approach.

You didn't ask, but the other heater hose fitting - the one that screws into the water pump - was not painted.

Ospho is a good option for cleaning/etching the bare metal.  Make sure it's compatible with the topcoat.
