Restored original lower control arms - 1971 to 1973
« on: June 03, 2022, 07:23:03 AM »
Restored original set of lower control arms correct for 71-73 Mustangs these would be perfect for a high end Boss 351 restoration or anything Mustang or Cougar from 71 to 73.  These had zero rust, pitting, or damage to start with and have been correctly restored and dipped in paint.  Ready to install.  You can see the paint runs in the photo which is impossible to fake without actually dipping them and matches what originals looked like. Only set like this I have right now.

$1100 for the set plus shipping.

May I ask what is done for the restoration process? Not questioning the product, just trying to learn what can can be done by experts.

Assembly line lower arms never came with the tips so shiny.
The process might explain it better. After stamping, a process that involved oil to facilitate a 100 top press to cut and stamp the arms in several steps, the arms were unceremoniously tossed in a bin. The next step would have cleaned the stamping oil off, then the black paint applied on the end by dipping; the bushing at that end installed; the ball joint installed at the other end and then the completed arm stacked for shipment. There may have been cardboard between layers. These are not for display in the Louvre.
PS. I was a Production Control/Inventory Manager in a hi-tech manufacturing shop (boards and chassis) in Silicon Valley with a 30 top press in the machine shop.

Marcus,

When I worked at Shelby Parts and Restoration, I took my car apart and Jim sent out my original upper and lower arms I removed, this was way back in 1991 or so.  They returned bare metal and oiled in a heavy-duty plastic bag.  In June of this year, I finally got them out of the bag, removed the oil and dipped them.  I guess now it's a big liability issue with pressing in the correct ball joints.

Jim...thanks for the advice on restoring these.  When you come up with a better way of doing them let us all know and educate us so we can be the wiser.

Obviously we all know that the control arms were not this perfect when they were originally finished.....just like the cars we restore today were not this nice either.  If you have ever spent time doing a full restoration you realize that perfection on each and every part of the car is a damn good thing and doing things sloppy is not something to strive for.  At least I dont.  I have restored alot of these control arms for people and shops over the years, and your the first person to complain that it looks too good.  So I take that as a compliment coming from you.   ;D
