Hello,

I was reading through the assembly manual on steering assembly.  On the CD it talks about paint daubs on the ends of the tie rods.  LH I believe was yellow daub, RH was green daub.  Where exactly are they talking about putting the daub?  On the end of the tie rod or on the end of the threads?  Anyone have pictures of this?  Were the front springs general stripe colors based on the build sheets or a general assembly practice.  San Jose plant. 69, 428CJ

Any information would be great.

Dave

Don't know if the illustrators had any idea of where a paint mark would be placed and how since they were not the ones responsible for applying them. That was done at the supplier of the part's task

Haven't found many marked or still marked on unrestored cars but here is a Dearborn example fo the green mark. They have been found maybe twice this size on other cars

Colors applied to the springs was from a sheet that the supplier of the springs used and that was reflected on the buildsheets to guide the warehouse and line personnel. An additional white spray striped could be applied if the front spring didn't test correctly and outside of the range specified by the Ford

Guess your looking original colors used for you car.  Need more info for that. Since you provided San Jose, 69 CJ but what transmission, PS or no PS and body style as well as when was it built?

Thank you, Jeff,

I read the whole older posts about this subject.  My car is an automatic, power steering, Mach I, actual build October 14th, 1968.

Thank you so much Jeff!  I am truly amazed at your knowlege on these cars!  I wish I didn't have AC because the pink stripe on the coil spring is much cooler looking!  LOL!

Is the gold stripe more like a darker yellow?  Cheese head gold?

Did you happen to look at the article in the Library with the colors and examples at the end of it?

Example of the gold is a spring marking so its one example used by one of the suppliers that provided the springs to the plants

Easier to show than to try and describe it well enough for each of us to envision the exact same color ;)

i'll look there.  I was in the library but just saw an example of a spring and stripes.  I'm not sure if I was in the correct spot.  I was in the spot where you wrote many of the articles.  It was under paint daubs.

Article I was referring to is titled Paint Marks - The Basics

At/near the end of the article is a list of typical colors and some examples of those colors from unrestored cars or parts. There is an example of a Gold mark there for reference and comparison
