Fastback vent louver detail
« on: June 03, 2022, 03:28:08 AM »
On 65-66 fastbacks, I seem to recall seeing a few original cars where the largest vent screen piece in the rear louvers had the chicken wire painted black.  This is the only one that that has the chicken wire attached by bending over the edges of the diecast housing... which makes it nearly impossible to remove without breaking apart.

I don't remember exactly what year/assembly plant cars I saw this on... I think at least one was a '65 San Jose car.

I'm currently working on a Jan '66 Metuchen fastback and this detail had me wondering... I did see signs of black paint on this one, but it could have been something a previous owner did.

Charles, does this help?

March 26, 1966 Metuchen build.

Looks like traces of black paint on back but not face.

I'm referring to the chicken wire on that largest front piece... the part that shows on the exterior of the car, I have seen the chicken wire painted black.

On my San Jose Oct 65 GT Fastback, from the outside, all the screen mesh is "silver/chrome" but all the vent openings have a black background on the inside.

Thanks, that's what I normally see.  I normally would have discounted one here or there with the screen painted black, but the cars I saw it on looked relatively original.
