Autolite 1100 connections and vacuum connections
« on: June 13, 2022, 10:14:30 AM »
Hello all

I am assembling a 68 plain jane coupe literally from piles of boxes, which have parts from other years and models.  I'm using the shop manual, Exploded View Illustrated Manual and this forum, especially the Unrestored Pics section and the bolts_hardware spreadsheet.  I have restored 67 & 68 Mustangs w/ 289s and 302s; Ive never worked on the 200 engine.  I have a few questions regarding the carb and vacuum connections.
The car was built in Metuchen on Feb 9, 8T01T165033.  No PS, no AC, IMCO, no smog pump, nuthin' fancy.

#1  Where does the Distributor Vacuum Control Valve (DVCV) mount to engine and which way is it oriented?  The shop manual says in the "coolant outlet elbow" but several of the unrestored pics show it mounted to the thermostat housing.  I have the original DVCV and the striped vacuum connection hoses (red, yellow, green).  Can the DVCV be tested like a thermostat?  Any addition help in the vacuum line routing would be helpful.

#2  My Autolite 1100 has a C7DF JA 7FC tag.  Since was this a February car, is it possible Ford used '67 carbs on my 68?  According to the vacuum diagram in the shop manual, the yellow stripe hose goes from nippled distributor connection to the carb.  My carb has a brass fitting just above the throttle attaching rod on the spacer.  I'm assuming the rubber hose transitions to a steel formed pipe that goes to the brass fitting??

#3 Which brass fitting attaches to the intake manifold?   According to the vacuum diagram in the shop manual, the red stripe hose goes from the intake manifold fitting to the top of the DVCV.  I have the 9A474 brass fitting.  The 67-68 Exploded View Illustration Manual shows a 371176-S brass fitting as well.  Should both of these fittings be installed?  As far as I can tell, the only connection to the intake manifold I need is the red striped hose.  I believe that the hose to the PCV comes from the carb spacer, correct?

#4 The shop manual shows two springs for the carb linkage: 1) accelerator retracting spring 9737 which goes from bottom of linkage to front of manifold log and 2) Return spring 7B146 which appears to connect on both sides of accelerator control shaft rod.  Are these springs available?  I'm finding springs for earlier models but not for the 68.

Lastly, and maybe most importantly, does anybody have pictures of the 68 autolite 1100 throttle linkage and vacuum connections and routing?  Unfortunately, none of the unrestored pics have the air cleaner off and online searches focus on 65-67 Mustangs.  I have attached two pics of my carb hookup in progress, you can see the DVCV laying unattached.

Thanx for your help.  Dave

Dave,
There are illustrations shown in "Ford Car Parts" (aka MPC) copies of which are in this forum's library. There is a "slight" possibility that the "1967 Ford Products Engine Assembly Manual" (there is no 1968 manual available) may have your answer too.

Not a major focus for the vast majority of us as you know but let's see fi we can at least improve our understanding. Sorry for not answering everything this time sort of going for the low hanging fruit this first pass

Not sure what a DVCV is but guess I could look it up, Do see, like other engines) a Ported Vacuum Switch PVS used on almost all of the applications. It. like on many V8s is mounted in the thermostat housing which I guess could also be referred to as the "coolant outlet elbow"  The PVS can be tested

Given the date code on the tag and reference books its unlikely that its the original carb. Book I'm looking at shows C8OF-A or B

Pictures show the brass fitting with the two small nipples and the threaded female attachment hole that faces forward. One appears to be used and the other one capped. In that hole on cars equipped like your is a second brass fitting that plugs it.

Yes the PCV hose connects to the nipple facing towards the battery below the carb

They might be available in NOS or used form but not something I believe you can just look up in a catalog or online and order
