Kick Panel Rivet
« on: May 09, 2022, 11:09:05 AM »

I judged a 68 at the MCA show in Florence SC, both kick panels had a rivet in the upper rear section. The owner did not know why the rivet was there. The other two judges had not ever seen a rivet in a kick panel. After the owner received his judging sheet, he found a Mustang salvage yard that had a rivet in both kick panels (His Pictures Attached). Has anyone ever seen this and why are they there?

Did you happen to note the plant and time frame?

Sometime in the 1968 model year the hole was relocated in both kick panels. As there was already a supply of kick panels in stock the extra holes were simply plugged with a pop rivet. The change affected both Mustangs and Cougars. The Cougar kick panels were made from Mustang kick panels. The difference - Cougars had speaker holes heat stamped in the panels.

I've noticed these pop rivets in seemingly unmolested cars from around December 1967 - January 1968. I don't think any were from San Jose, only Dearborn.

This car was a 68CJ. I do not know the build date, but it was a Dearborn car.

Thanks for the reply, the panels in the picture are most likely original.

Keith, thanks for posting this as I lost track of it since Florence. So it seems to be a legit installation for the time frame.
