Heater Delete
« on: February 22, 2011, 09:00:11 AM »
Last week we bought a 68 California Special that was sold out of the SJ - 72 DSO. The Marti report says it had a heater delete. The car is a basket case. I would like to know with this option was there a control panel and a air box? Marty

- Firewall pad would not be punched out (section would not be removed) where the heater would normally be located. Dearborn (firewall pad is different) example in the photo

- Metal plate covers what would have been the hole in the firewall for the heater motor

- Rubber plugs where the heater hoses would passed through - see picture above

- Rubber plugs over the heater hose attachment points at the water pump and intake (if a V8)

- The heater panel is there but has a "filler" attached to the back side.

- Passenger side vent is installed in place of the heater

Thanks Jeff,
I should have known that you would have pictures! Unfortunately all of these unique parts are gone, lost when a heater was installed. We live in Nebraska and I am sure that dad will want the heater but it would have been nice to have those original parts. Marty

I wouldn't give up looking for them.  Some rare parts come up for sale when you least expect it.  I was actually able to acquire an NOS carpet for the K convertible last month.  Never thought I would find it!

The plenum is different on a  65/66 heater delete car vs a 67/68 one. The door is hinged so it opens differently from each other. I do have a extra 67/68 delete dash heater plate like Jeff pictured. PM me if interested . Bob

Just FYI, Most 67's I've seen have the plastic plate behind a standard, heater control casting like the one you have pictured, Most 68's have a heater control panel cast without openings for the slots.....    John

John, maybe the most that you have seen ;) Interestingly I have seen more 68's with the same two piece style heater control plate rather then the one piece. Bob

Hi Bob,  I'm sure you've seen way more cars than I have, I've seen 2 67's (both had the plastic insert), and 3 68's (all late cars, all had the cast, one piece panels) additionally, I've bought 2 more of the cast one piece panels, both off of 68's (one standard, and one woodgrain, can't imagine a deluxe interior car without a heater  :o )  One thing I've never seen is a 69/70 heater delete car, I'd love to see what ford did for the heater control panel.....  Buying/Hoarding  rare or  NOS 69/70 parts has been an obsession of mine since the 1980's  John

John, I think you answered your own question. It was most likely a early late transition in 68. History shows Ford many times didn't let a model year change stand in the way of re engineer parts parts for cost or safety. In this instance I am a little puzzled that Ford went to the added expense of a different cast plates over the logically lower cost of the plastic insert that would change any ordinary 67/68 standard or deluxe plate into a heater delete plate. I have never seen a 69 heater delete plate first hand ether. Bob

Looks like the heater control panel was not changed much - just no controls (cut outs or slide areas still there) and no printing on the panel

Here is a picture of some of the related items removed from what was reported to be  a 69 Heater delete car
