68 GT wheel size?
« on: September 22, 2020, 10:30:38 PM »
I put GT wheels on my 68 coupe 30 years ago when I got it on the road from restoration. I need to replace the tires, probably wait until spring. Does anyone know what size the wheels are so I can start figuring out what tire size I want to buy? The GT wheels are chrome in the center, but if I remember correctly, the part that is covered by the outer trim ring is just steel, not chromed. Does that sound right?

The standard 68 GT wheel was 14 x 6 with center argent painted. The chrome center was optional but the same size.

On a 14x6 factory Ford rim, a 215/70/14 is a great tire size.

I'm running BFG 215/70/14 on both my 67 coupe and 69 Mach.

Hope this helps.

The answer to your question, LOL, of course.

It came factory with the styled steel wheels and these are the actual ones mounted originally in 1969 when built.

A 69 Mach1 never came from the factory with different size tires front and back. Even big block 69's had the same size rubber front and back.

Mine is a 69 Mach 1 351W NJ built Feb 24, 1969. And came with the 14x6 factory styled steel rims.

Our 69 has been in my wife's family since Jan 70.

Very nice 69! My 68 has 205/70-14 up front and 245/60-14 on the rear. I've always thought that the front tires fill the fender wells too much. Would like a shorter tire up front and/or a taller tire in the rear. I like the wider tire look on the rear. Will be replacing tires in the spring, so thanks for posting pictures to give me an idea for new tires! Can't figure out how to post a picture of my 68, but hopefully the tire sizes I mentioned will help.

I just ordered Cooper Cobra Radial GT's for my 68 GT wheels. I ordered 215/70R14's for the fronts and spare and 225/70R14's for the rear. Should get them mounted/balanced this week. Bring them home and put on the car. Then once the salt gets off the road in the spring, drive the car in town to get the front end alignment checked. Come on spring!!!!
