Water Pump variations, small block Ford
« on: January 29, 2022, 11:12:47 PM »
I was at a swap meet today and ran across a water pump which hard a full exposed impeller. It was in a Ford or Motorcraft box. This got me wondering about the various types that were used. Since rebuilt water pumps are pretty much a thing of the past it would seem wise to collect the correct Ford housings for future rebuilding.

Is there a document identifying these water pumps. 64-95
-early aluminum
-cast iron
-aluminum
-short nose
-reverse rotation

These are just a few of the variations I have heard of. And of course there is probably some matching to the front housing variations.

While water pump rebuilding is certainly not as prevalent as in the past, it is not extinct.  If you want the name and number of the guy near me in Dearborn that does it, send me a PM.

Thanks John.

Actually the purpose of the post is to identify the cores I would to collect first. My cars are not rare so I didn't think the info was easy to find in one place.

Your question is too broad to answer. There is no document to identify a wide range of water pumps. Perhaps a rebuilder would have something like (multiple documents identifying the specifics of each pump) that as a trade secret. I doubt they would share it without compensation.

Thanks John.

If you are focusing on the 221/260/289/302/351w I would think that Bob Mannels book would be the place to start.

Agreed. However the 351W is not included. The chart included both casting and engineering numbers.

Might also consult and exchange manual (like Chilton's) also. These use to be used by yard to identify what parts could be sold or used to replace a part a customer was looking for. For the 90's I think these would be software based where older ones with in book form

Yes, Bob Mannel's book explains them pretty well. Some are also coupled with specific timing chain covers.

I have not tracked down the Bob Manuel book yet. I am focusing on the SB Fords from the mustang generations.I have learned a bit so far. I did not know the early mustangs used a very different water pump with an aluminum housing. Most of the 66-78 pumps were cast iron. I will look into collecting more info on these.

There is no need for me to focus on the rare and special versions. I'm sure those who need them are hunting them down. I think there is a short version too.

That leaves the 79-93 versions. I did find an interchange manual in my library by Ford p/n.
79-84 seems to be all the same 4.2/5.0
85 has 2 versions. This about when they reversed the impeller.
86-89 seems to be another version.
90-92 is another version
93 is yet another.

No details on casting IDs but I probably have 2-3 hanging around.
