1967 Tail Light Panel and Light Housing Removal
« on: December 01, 2021, 05:54:05 PM »
I am trying to remove my tail light panel and tail light housings for installation of a new gas tank. The 6 studs and nuts above and below each light housing where the flange is just spin. The stud spins with the nut, but the stud is not coming free from the screw hole. Some spin freely, some spin with some torque, but none come out no matter how much I spin them. Is there a diagram around somewhere which breaks down the parts so I can better understand the set up and therefore solve the problem? Thanks. ps. the 4 or 6 studs and nuts that are attached to the rear of the light housing do the same spin. Also, there is really no room to hold the stud with pliers while I spin the nut off.

So spinning the nuts and studs does not result of the studs unscrewing themselves from the frame?  Guess you have confirmed that the stud is spinning with the nut by viewing the stud through the small holes near each stud

The 6 studs and nuts above and below each light housing where the flange is just spin. The stud spins with the nut, but the stud is not coming free from the screw hole.
Those studs are "staked" to the housing (a square hole is involved). You are spinning the stud alright. Try clamping down on the exposed tip of the stud with vice grips and turning the nut with a wrench. You will most likely need new light housings in any case. Get a set of 67 Mustang Assembly Manuals, plus you can also "see" a drawing in the library of this forum in Ford Car Parts, aka MPC.

Jim the drawings in the assembly manual are no the same as the Shelby application

On a 67 Shelby the studs are different. Basically all thread cut off so they lack the unthreaded tips as found on Mustangs of the same year

Also the assembly isn't represented in the MPC either. There is a 67 Shelby "assembly manual" that I think is still available in print form. Virginia, Branda and a few other places should carry it if needed.

Pictures of the studs and nuts

And one of the worker at Shelby assembling the housings.

I have the assembly manuals, but the Shelby housings are different. The upper left of the left hand picture here doesn't quite show the flange nuts 6 upper, 6 lower per housing left and right. Those are spinning. I can see the stud rotate with the nut when I turn it. No real room to grasp the top of the stud and spin the nut. I can try it. I didn't really try and turn the 6 or so studs on the back of the black housing. I thought those were to hold the light fixtures to the black housing. I could be wrong since these housings are new to me.

It looks like in the pictures that I should concentrate on the 6 studs on the back of the black housing? Once the tail light lenses are pulled off from the back, the flange nuts and studs of the housing to fiberglass panel will be more accessible?

The flange nuts hold the studs and 67 housing to the black Shelby tail light box which is secured to the sheet metal of the regular Mustang tail panel rivets. Yes you need to take the flange nuts off of the 6 studs on each side. The nuts are taken out from the trunk side.

Yup. I've been helping out a neighbor on his 67 Hardtop and had "67" on the brain, not "67Shelby". And for future reference, check out (in the 75 ed) of Ford Car Parts (aka MPC), Illustrated Section 134 page 15. It actually has both Shelby and non-Shelby rear lights drawings on the same page.

I see some spreadsheets and pictures in the library, but not this one despite the section and page. Searches of the section number doesn't bring it up. Can someone point me to the spot. Thanks.

Here is section 134, page 15.

I would say not very useful for a 1967 Shelby.

Reminds me of the 68 steering co!umn pics in the 67 ASM.

There are many different taillight panels and I wonder if this has the shallow or deep metal box, flat or extended fiberglass panel, and if the taillight bezel has studs or holes.
