66 Red Interior NJ Headliner color?
« on: February 15, 2014, 03:56:07 PM »
Hi All:  Quick question.  What would the headliner color be for a 1966 coupe with a standard interior (65A) and a trim code of 25 (red crinkle
vinyl and red rosette pattern vinyl).  I'm guessing red, but would white have also been available?

Thanks: John

John,

I went through this discussion with my car, a '65 January Dearborn built Coupe about 6 months ago. In my case it turned out that the original liner was White and not the color of the rest of the interior; the Sun Visors were also white. Yours being a '66, I'm not sure if the same applies about color coding. You may get a better answer from those who are more expert in this area but you would need to post which plant built your car and the build date.

Good luck with your car, it took some discussion and finally evidence I found on my car that finally determined what was correct in my case.

Hey Guys:  Sorry for the omission of information. The car is a 1966 K code coupe built in Metuchen in November of 1965.
The car belongs to a good friend of mine, it is in the process of restoration and it had no interior in it when he got it, thus
      the inquiry.

Don't know if the non- matching headliners in red interior 66 coupes around the Nov - Dec period was also at NJ. Would not be an "option" or choice but a supply issue it appears

At the other two plants the time period may have varied a little - though we really don't know when any of these were built ;)

Will look through my pictures to see if I have any original examples

PS did change the title of the thread to reflect the focus - and move it all to the 65-66 section since your question is specific about one time period :)

Dunno if this will help or just confuse things further, but a close friend owns a Jan '66 Metuchen GT coupe with a standard red interior. He's owned it for over 35 years now. The interior has never been restored. The headliner in it is red.

JK believe that supports the idea that they had the problem/issue taken care of by Jan. Similar to what I've seen at other plants

Looked through my limited number of 66 NJ interior pictures and found the following example - Mid Nov projected build date NJ 66 coupe

Has he looked for any evidence of a little piece of old headliner on the edges or
where the front and back glass weatherstrip sits etc?
I was in the same situation, was able to find a little piece of the original headliner
left behind.

Jeff: Thanks for checking through your photos and posting what you have.  In the posted photo I can see that the package tray appears to
be red in color, but if you look at the passenger side interior sail panel area, it appears to be a lighter color.
What do you guys see?

C5ZZ:  My friend has looked for evidence of the headliner at the front and back window openings, but the car came without any windshield, back glass or gaskets, so his search has been futile to this point.  The car has been to the media blaster now, so any evidence is now long gone.
Thanks

Here are some pics of a 9k original mile '66 coupe.  The reds match a lot better than folks these days think.

As we would expect on a red interior car even a well used one like this example

Yes the purpose of the picture was to see if I could find any Nov - Dec red interior 66's built at NJ with a white head liner like we have found on Dearborn and San Jose built cars built around the same time. It appears that this is just one such example the head liner looks white to me

To answer your original question - What color would my November 65 NJ built red interior coupe have?  It looks like there is a possibility that it was white - but would want more than one example (at least three or more originals) to have a strong possibility ;)

Sorry if this is out of topic, but the 66 Fastback I owned between 1988-2011 had a code 25 red interior and white headliner and sun visors. It was scheduled 08K and bucked 12K 1965 in Metuchen. I haven't seen any red headliners in fastbacks from this group of cars.
I have discussed this before on VMF and possibly here and people have said "oh, its an export car...) but I do not know if it has something to do with it?

Folks, I recently purchased a 66 GT Coupe sitting in the 2nd owners garage since 1987. It was built at the Metuchen plant built date August 26th 1965, first day they built the 66 models. The buck tag says it was built August 30th. The color code is (A) Raven Black and the Trim Code is (25) Dark Red. The headliner is white, its in good shape.

Welcome to the site and adding your findings to this discussion. BTW the buck tag does not list the likely date your car though it may match. Basically the same practice as the door tag (projected/guessed upon) date

Again - Welcome
