67 deluxe seat back hardware
« on: May 17, 2015, 09:55:40 PM »
I have a couple of question pertaining to hardware for a 1967 with deluxe interior.  Car was built at the San Jose plant in late Dec of 66.  The first question is, what type of screws were used to attach the plastic hard back of the front seats?  Pictures would be great.  2.  I found no evidence of screws to hold the carpet down in the front seat risers.  It seems to be typical for cars to have them, but is it possible my car didn't get them?  My car does have a center console if that matters.  Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
John

2. Seat risers haven't been replace and there is no inner or outer holes in them?

Guess the worker could have left his station without being noticed and the inspector that followed him missed them also but not sure if I would reproduce a mistake/error. Would check along that top front edge from one side of the car to the other

There are brackets that hold the seatbacks to the TOP of the seat frame. There are other brackets that hold the lower trim panels to the lower seat frame. I have seen them reproduced and they include the screws also. Otherwise, AMK sells a screw kit, no brackets and no plastic shim spacers for the upper mounts but images can be found if you do a Google Search of AMK F-300.

1. +1 Richard
2. I'll have to check mine again but don't think I had screws (or evidentiary holes) on my Dec 66 SJ.

Coincidental, I had just photographed the hardware last night for a listing to sell some Deluxe seat trim and hardware on eBay. Hope the photos help the OP figure it out.

I think many people do not realize how these went on, they scratch together the moldings ($$$ paying dearly for them too $$$), buy all of the fiberglass reproductions and a few spray-bombs to paint them and think THERE, I'm ready! Too bad this isn't really that easy,  but then if it were easy conversion, like say for example the Pony Interior seats on the 66's...everyone would have the Deluxe Seats (like the Pony Seats are everywhere now). I also tried the fiberglass panels to replace 3 out of 4 broken originals, and even with all of the brackets and having all of the holes pre-drilled on the seat frames, I could not get a satisfactory fitment out of the reproduction seat backs. I think I would have pulled my hair out by the roots or probably even  committed a homicide or suicide had I tried simply doing a conversion alone! I ended up with original parts/pieces and am very pleased now. I then sold off the fiberglass junk.

Thanks everyone for the responses.  The pictures are exactly what I needed to see.  Jeff, I went back and double check that there are no holes in my seat risers.  Based on what you said, I will add them.  Who knows why they were left out.  John

Old post, but this looks like an appropriate place to augment the existing discussion rather than start afresh.  I've misplaced the nuts (which I think should be the stamped style) that hold the stainless steel moldings on the bucket seat backs found on interior decor optioned cars.  Plus I have no pictures from when I disassembled.  I did look though...  I don't see a part number in Jim's fastener spreadsheet.  It was not in the deluxe interior AMK kit.  The assembly manual shows the molding attached to the panel, so nothing there.  The MPC (picture attached) shows them taken apart in the illustration, but the nuts are not shown.  The MPC parts listing says that the fasteners are included with the molding ("includes attaching parts").  Next step will be to measure the stud OD, and measure the witness lines imprinted on the plastic.  If I recall correctly they were really really small from an overall OD perspective due to clearances.   I would like to get the part numbers into Jim's spreadsheet for future reference, and more important is to come up with these so I can get the seats in.  TIA

Update - I looked in the spare parts bin and came up with a lower side piece with trim and fasteners.  The stud is about 0.137" OD which matches up (close enough for me) to a nominal #6 size.  The hole in the nut, which is difficult due to distortion (stamped metal) was a bit bigger than a #31 drill bit (0.120") but smaller than a 1/8" bit (0.125").  The nut driver size is 11/32".  According to the 1969 standard and utility parts catalog, the smallest listed for a #8-32, and I need a #6.  So I went back to the 579 page Ford engineering fastener manual and found something that would work, but has one issue.  Part number 45228 is listed as a #6-32 (good), with a 0.312 nominal width (also good), but a 0.150 nominal thickness.  The thickness is, from a percentage perspective, much more than the 0.105 that I measured on the actual nut.  However, in the big scheme of things will work just fine.  Based on a quick internet search bearing no fruit, I'll probably tear the shop apart looking for these.
